Mining in Liberia plays a significant role in the country’s GDP, with a growing minerals industry that continues to develop since the end of the country’s civil war in the early 2000s.
Located on the tropical west-African coast, Liberia is surrounded by rich gold, diamond and iron ore deposits. While it has been demonstrated that Liberia possesses a wide variety of minerals, these reserves remain largely unexplored, offering excellent investment potential for mining houses.
Found within Liberia’ borders are two of the richest gold-bearing rock types, Archaean and Birimian, most of which remain intact. Liberia also has unexplored resources of chromium, kyanite, manganese, nickel, palladium, rare earth minerals and uranium, while the heavy mineral sands on the country’s beaches contain rich deposits of ilmenite, rutile, zircon, monazite and thorium. Bauxite is found in the north and south-eastern parts of the country, the total reserves of which are yet to be determined. 553 150 tonnes of barite at depths of up to 150 metres have been surveyed within the country’s Gibi District.
Africa Mining IQ’s database of 24 Liberian mining projects reflects the underexplored nature of the country’s mineral wealth, with each listing currently under development, with the New Liberty Gold Project the only currently active mining project.
Included on Africa Mining IQ’s database is Liberia’s highest capital value prefeasibility project, the Western Cluster Iron Ore Project. The Western Cluster is comprised of several deposits, two of which have been mined previously, that together are estimated to hold over 1 billion tons of iron ore reserves. The Western Cluster Iron Ore Project currently has an exploration value of R981 million.
