Here the metal moves along one continuous track: chromite is cut from the Bushveld, then carried only as far as the nearest furnace to be turned into ferrochrome. For all its scale, chrome is the understated heavyweight of the country's mining sector, seldom drawing the attention that gold or platinum command. Even so, roughly 70% of the world's chrome reserves lie here, almost entirely locked into the chromite seams of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Those seams gave up about 15 million tonnes of chrome ore in 2016, near enough half of the global haul for the year, and together South Africa and Zimbabwe account for close to 90% of all the chromite on Earth.
The difference here is that the ore does not simply leave as ore. It rolls straight into a second and heavier industry, smelting into ferrochrome, the alloy without which stainless steel cannot be made. The same rock that gives up chromite also carries platinum, and the public record follows the seams down both limbs, from Moeijelik and Mecklenburg in Limpopo across to Ruighoek by Rustenburg. The Steelpoort Valley on its own accounts for something like three-quarters of the ferrochrome made anywhere.
Stretched end to end, that seam-to-alloy business underpins about 20,000 jobs and roughly R42 billion of GDP each year, while the chromium-ore export trade clears billions of dollars. The ferrochrome producers at the helm dictate the tempo, and for the firms that supply them the prize lies in seeing which projects are advancing, where each sits in its life and whose desk to aim for.
