When it comes to platinum, South Africa stands at the middle of everything. The country sits on better than 80% of the planet's known platinum-group-metal reserves and turns out roughly 80% of the platinum dug each year, nearly all of it lifted from one piece of geology. Every one of the leading platinum producers, Amplats, Impala, Sibanye-Stillwater, Northam and African Rainbow Minerals, builds its business on that ground.
That ground is the Bushveld Igneous Complex, a layered intrusion 2 billion years old that sweeps over Limpopo and North West in the form of the Western and Eastern Limbs. Because the reefs lie deep and stay narrow, the work is heavy on both labour and capital: about 12 tonnes of rock surrender just one ounce of platinum.
