These collieries feed Sasol's Secunda and Sasolburg complexes, and several are major replacement mines being built as older shafts run out, the kind of long-run capital work that opens procurement to suppliers.
Impumelelo Colliery
Impumelelo, formerly Carmona, covers around 21,000 hectares. As the older Twistdraai, Brandspruit and Middelbult mines approach the end of their lives, Impumelelo and Thubelisha are ramping up as Sasol's strategic coal supply, with capacity of 9.5 to 10.5 Mt a year split between export markets and Sasol Synfuels. It is a conventional bord-and-pillar operation.
Shondoni Colliery
Shondoni was built as a brand-new mine rather than an expansion, to work around a graben fault on Twistdraai's eastern border, and it also replaces the ageing Twistdraai, Brandspruit and Middelbult mines. Extractable reserves of around 190 million tonnes give it roughly a 20-year life at up to 10.5 Mt a year. Coal reaches the surface through the single-incline Shondoni Shaft conveyor.
Thubelisha Colliery
Thubelisha is a greenfields underground mine replacing the export reserves lost as Twistdraai's export shafts are mined out. Its materials-handling infrastructure, valued at close to R1 billion, ranks among Sasol's largest replacement projects, with two vertical shafts, one decline shaft to 160 m and an 18 km surface conveyor. Designed for 9 to 10.5 Mt a year, it has a projected life of 32 to 35 years.
Sigma / Mooikraal Operations
Sigma Colliery has produced since 1954, using conventional bord-and-pillar mining with continuous miners and shuttle cars. A new underground operation in the colliery's Block 13 now supplies the group's Sasolburg utility plants, replacing the depleted Mohlolo and Wonderwater operations. Coal travels an 18 km conveyor to raise process steam and generate electricity.
Bosjesspruit / Irenedale
Bosjesspruit, part of the Secunda Mining Complex, is an underground bord-and-pillar and total-extraction operation. Its Irenedale extension effectively relocates the 25-year-old Bosjesspruit colliery into the Irenedale South reserves, adding an incline shaft, surface overland conveyors and a vertical shaft at 165 m depth. The project extends the mine's life by at least another 20 years.

About Sasol Mining
Sasol Mining (Pty) Ltd runs underground coal operations at Bosjesspruit, Brandspruit, Middelbult, Syferfontein and Twistdraai around Secunda in Mpumalanga, together with Sigma near Sasolburg. This cluster is one of the largest coal-producing footprints in the country.
The business extracts roughly 40 Mt of saleable coal a year. Most of that tonnage goes straight to Sasol Synfuels at Secunda as gasification feedstock, with the balance supplying utilities coal to the Sasolburg Operations. A further 2.8 Mt or so is sold for export each year, shipped from the Twistdraai Export Plant to power-generation buyers across Europe and the Far East.
As long-standing mines work through their reserves, Sasol has been bringing replacement capacity online.
