Inside Kumba's iron ore business

Kumba: iron ore at world scale
Not many mines shift more ground than Sishen. Set near Kathu in the Northern Cape, it ranks with the largest iron ore open pits found anywhere, a working face that runs kilometres along strike and is dug by some of the heaviest drilling, blasting and earthmoving fleets in the country. It is the high-grade hematite out of Sishen, upgraded through dense-media separation plants, that lifts Kumba from a domestic name into a producer of global weight.
Kolomela, near Postmasburg, is the younger of Kumba's two producing pits and shares the same high-grade orebody and the same route to market. Almost all of the company's current output comes from these two Northern Cape operations, while Thabazimbi in Limpopo, the original Kumba mine that once fed South Africa's steel industry, has since wound down to a historic footnote.
