Company profile

About Anglo American's South African coal

Anglo American has a long history in South African coal, and for decades its collieries were a mainstay of the country's thermal-coal supply, feeding domestic power generation and export markets alike.

In 2021 Anglo American demerged its South African thermal coal operations into a separate listed business, Thungela Resources. Thungela now runs the seven collieries, Goedehoop, Greenside, Kleinkopje, Landau, New Denmark, Isibonelo and New Vaal, most of them in Mpumalanga's coalfields.

It remains a large, established thermal-coal base with continuous procurement across mining, processing and logistics, exactly the kind of capital and operating activity suppliers should be watching. This output forms part of the larger picture of coal mining in South Africa and feeds into the wider set of mining companies in South Africa.

Questions suppliers ask

Anglo American coal: supplier FAQ

Who runs Anglo American's coal mines in South Africa now?

Anglo American demerged its South African thermal coal operations in 2021 into a separate listed business, Thungela Resources. Thungela now operates the collieries that were formerly part of Anglo American's South African coal business.

Which coal mines are these?

The operation spans seven collieries in South Africa: Goedehoop, Greenside, Kleinkopje, Landau, New Denmark, Isibonelo and New Vaal. Most of them sit in Mpumalanga's coalfields.

What do these collieries produce?

These are thermal-coal operations supplying domestic power generation and export markets. AMIQ links that activity to the live project set so suppliers can focus on the jobs that fit.

How do suppliers get onto these coal projects?

Most awards are shaped long before anything reaches public tender. Knowing which colliery is active, what stage its work has reached, and the consultant or contractor carrying the mandate gives you the edge. AMIQ joins those early signals to the gated contact records, letting you introduce yourself ahead of the field and aim your pitch at whoever holds the budget.

What does AMIQ track on these coal operations?

Per project, AMIQ holds the stage and timeline, the colliery's place under Thungela, the consultants and contractors carrying a mandate, and the named buyer contacts kept behind the subscription. Project values remain gated and open only to subscribers.
